South Point High School Founded on April 1st, 1954, at 16 Mandeville Gardens in south Kolkata, South Point School began with only twenty students and a band of committed teachers. Drawing its first faculty from the cultural, literary and artistic milieu of Bengal the School began to make legendary progress in all fields in a very short span of time. It is currently run by the South Point Education Society. An English-medium and co-educational School, South Point has played a significant role in the social and intellectual history of post-Independent Kolkata. The High School shifted to its present home at 82/7A Ballygunge Place on 8th April 1970.

Shri Satikanta Guha was the founder of the School with Smt. Prityalata Guha as the associate founder. -
The first School Final batch went out in 1958. -
South Point has the rare distinction of winning a place in the Guinness Book of Records (1984-1992) as the world's largest School. -
It is now a large family comprising nearly 13,500 students, 325 teachers and 225 non-teaching staff-members. South Point School ranks fourth in the top ten list of India's Most Respected Schools according to The Education World -IMRB International Survey conducted on August 2007, which evaluated 250 schools in India and developed a league table ranking them.

South Point High School was the first co-educational School in the city, to be affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. It upgraded to Higher Secondary level on 1st April 1960. South Point School has Nursery, Transition and Classes I to V. Students then study in South Point High School from Classes VI to X under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Thereafter, majority of students continue their studies in Classes XI and XII, under the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education.

The School offers opportunities to all its students to indulge in a range of extra-curricular activities like Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Rock-Climbing, Table Tennis and Quizzing. South Point students are distributed over six colourful Houses, named after legendary personalities. Inter-House competitions are held throughout the year and at the end, prizes are awarded to individual winners and the Houses concerned. Five Inter-School events take place under the aegis of the M. P. Birla Smarak Kosh (South Point) and hosted by South Point High School. They provide a most vibrant platform to explore various creative and performing talents of Pointers as well as students from other schools. Winners lift the M. P. Birla Trophy along with cash prizes.
